Make your questions required

For higher response rates, we recommend letting people only answer the questions that they want. But sometimes there are questions that you need answered—in these cases, you can make them required.

Here’s how to set that up on any question in your form.

1. Go to your Workspace and open the form you want to edit.

2. Click on the question you want to make required, then go to the Question settings in the right-hand sidebar, where you can find the Required toggle. Click this to make your question required.

When activated, you’ll see an asterisk next to any question you've set to required.

Respondents will also see an asterisk at the end of any question you've set to required.

Now, when someone completes your form, they'll have to answer the required question before they can move on to the next question. If they try to move on to the next question without answering, they'll see a prompt to answer the required question.

If you want to let your respondents scroll past required questions and come back to them later, you can turn on the Free form navigation setting. This setting lets respondents navigate freely through your form before submitting, without having to answer each question in a linear order. However, they will have to answer any questions set as Required before they can submit their answers.

To turn on Free form navigation, click on the Settings icon.

Under the General tab, click the toggle next to Free form navigation, then click Save.

Legal questions

When a Legal question is set as Required but someone selects “I don’t accept”, they’ll see a pop-up message:

If they try to move to the next question or submit the form, it won’t let them until they answer the Legal question and any other required questions.

If you disable the “Required” toggle for a Legal question, respondents will be able to submit their responses even if they answer "I don't accept".
